With the trade deadline looming, many teams are scrambling to make last minute changes to their teams, both to make runs at post-season play, and to secure their futures for the seasons to come. Not many teams are out of the hunt for the post season, but many have hurdles to overcome and must play mistake free hockey to gain, or even keep their spot in the playoffs.
Rumblings going on behind the scenes are sometimes whispers, and other times screams from high above the ice surface. Teams and players alike voice their displeasure as they want more for their respective clubs and blame each other for the problems they encounter. Curtis Joseph holding out on the Saint John Barbarians could be part of the cause of the team’s woes as of late, or the team’s lack of steady success could be the reason for Joseph wanting more money or a change of scenery. Of course Cujo does have a no trade clause but this did force GM Kenny to look around until he found a deal that brought Roman Turek to the Barbarian team. Bathurst certainly has had an improvement in play this season, but with Rob DiMaio still a free agent, and the teams rebuild on the horizon, the team must choose whether or not the player is worth more as a player this season or to its future as a trade prospect.
The major movers and shakers as we approach the deadline do seem to be the teams in a run at the post season. Bathurst, Saint John, Riverview, South Esk, Harcourt and even Iona are some of the teams that may or may not make deals before what looks to be a Thursday trade deadline. Who moves and who stays is anyone’s guess until after then. |
