Sullivan Retiring?
Posted: 9/19/2004 By Benoit Beausoliel
Bathurst - Today in a press conference Sullivan put to rest all rumours about what his plans are for next season. "... as per my choice of what I am going to do next season I'm still not 100% sure it's going to depend on many things as of right now I do plan on playing for atleast next season the only way that I will not return is if we get everything that we want at the draft and something happens to Mariusz Czerkawski that he can't make the jump to our pro team which looks like he may even do so before seasons end." So far this season Sullivan has 12 goals, 22 assists and 79 penelty minutes in 76 games with the Bathurst Bacon.

Sullivan went on to address some other issues concerning the teams current situation along with the future oh the team. The Titan currently sit in fourth place in the Campbell conference only 1 point ahead of Tignish and Taintville and only 7 points behind the conference leading Scotsmen. "This is the tightest I've seen the league since I've taken over as GM and personally I like it, it's great for the fans we've been selling out every game and our TV ratings have been the highest they ever have been. I'm not speaking on behalf of the league or anything but I believe that we may be seeing a new era with almost every team equally competetive. As a GM however I would rather see us sitting on top of the league with a large lead but I'm just happy that our team is still in the playoff hunt, at this time last year the only battling that we were doing was to try and get out of the basement." So far this season with less than a dozen games left and the playoffs nearing the only team that is mathimatically out of the chase for the cup is the Shippigan Tigers.

Sullivan went on talking about the free agent situation "Right now we still haven't really signed anyone to a new contract all year with the exception of Rene Corbet and it's not cause we aren't trying we have been willing to pay since the start. Now that we no longer have DiMaio on our team I can explain the trade we had to weight out our options me, Mr. Martin and the owners had a meeting on what to do with our superstar right-winger and we all decided that it was best for the team to trade him and get something in return and what we saw in Markus Naslund was a young version of Rob DiMaio. As of now we are talking with JR and Brisebois' agent things are starting to get serious with Roenick and if he isn't willing to sign something at a reasonable price we are willing to let him test the market as we do have matching rights for him. Now Brisebois is a different story we have just started talking we are currently just trying to see what it is that he's looking for in terms of clauses and the lenght of the deal. We are making some offers to a few other players nothing to be considered serious talks but we are schedualed to have a meeting with St. Louis on Tuesday afternoon and with Laraque on Friday to discuss them staying with our club." On a side note Sullivan mentioned that he would like to talk with Mr. Nagle about where to attend one of these Contracts R Us seminars. We believe that Sullivan has a complete roster the way that he likes it for next year but we may see Kolzig and Waite switch places and many of the teams free agents leaving the club.

The press conference ended with Sullivan speaking on the upcoming draft "If the season was to end right now we would have 3 of the 6 loto picks and 6 of our 8 picks are in the top ten so believe that we will be able to have a very profitable draft but at the sametime we know that things are close and we may ended up with much worse picks but I'm going to make things clear we are going to and say it offically we are going to be after the 1st overall pick if we do not win it. Right now we have a few packages put together depending on what kinda pick they would want in return be it the 3rd or 4th or the 14th." It is believed that depending on what pick the team with the first overall selection would like in reture but players rumoured to be available in somekind of package are Rene Corbet, Pavel Trnka, Olaf Kolzig, Patrik Juhlin, Lyle Odelein, Jimmy Waite, and maybe the rights to free agents Jeremy Roenick, Joe Juneau and Scott Pearson.
