Patrik Laine played his 1000th game in the Bathurst’s 7-5 loss to Cains River on Friday. He scored his 8th goal of the season in the loss, but went down 2-0 in 20 minutes of ice time. Originally drafted by the Bathurst Mighty Ducks in the second round of the 2011 entry draft with the 5th overall pick, Laine has been in the professional leagues ever since.
Laine is currently in his 15th season in the ODBHL. He spent his first nine years in Bathurst before being traded to Saint John for the past five seasons due to cap issues. The Kings sent Laine back to Bathurst in the offseason to acquire a pick upgrade and other assets to help the Ducks manage the increased salary. Laine also had a brief stint with the Royals in season 7, which both teams have since downplayed.
Laine began his career by winning the Alexander Mogilny Trophy as the league’s top rookie. He has continued to excel, earning four ODBHL Cup rings (including three consecutive ones), two Mike Modano Trophies as the league’s leading goal scorer, and two Mark Messier Trophies for leading forwards in plus-minus. Laine aims to cement his legacy as a Hall of Famer by becoming the first player in ODBHL history to reach 500 career goals alter this year.
Laine is the 10th player in ODBHL history to reach the 1000-game milestone, and he’s the fifth player this season to do so. He’s also the third player with deep ties to Bathurst to join this exclusive list, alongside former teammates Connor McDavid and Aaron Ekblad.
