Extrapolating an almost career season

By Shannon Goodfellow

Conor Sheary is a freak in the ODBHL.  This player has been regarded as an underrated star by most GMs in the league.  Most of his career with the Oromocto Senators was highlighted by almost a point per game and a power play expert.  He then spent last season with the Moncton Melons and at 33 years of age and proved he could attain the same level of play with multiple teams, scoring 32 goals, 31 assists for 63 points in 72 games including 7 power play goals with an average of 17 minutes of ice time.

In the offseason, the South Esk Scotsmen extended an offer to the now 34 year old UFA.  The terms were clear, a pure power play specialist, receiving very little even strength ice time.  Reflecting on this, and extrapolating for ice time, Shery had almost a career season.  Playing an average of 1/3 the minutes (6 vs 18), Sheary accumulated 17 goals, 7 assist and 6 power play goals in 69 games.  Obviously, you can’t say with more ice time, and you are comparing apples to oranges if you compare even strength ice time vs man advantage, but if you tripled his goals and assists, he would have 51 goals and 21 assists for a total of 72 points, eclipsed only by his season 3 total with Oromocto.

Sheary has one year remaining on the deal he signed with South Esk.  He likely has one more kick at the can before retiring, unlikely to sign another contract with an ODBHL team.  He has never won a championship in the ODBHL or any awards, but he has solidified his reputation as one of the largest impact players of the first 10 seasons of the league.
