One of the best parts of a roster rebuild is that it gives any player an opportunity to shine, to do what they do best. Earlier this season, citing a need to protect their stars when games run amok, the Riverview Royals recalled 18 year old forward Darcy Hordichuk to play on the team's third line.
The 20th overall draft pick of the Royals in last summer's draft has a very specific skillset, is hugely strong with an intimidating intensity. Hordichuk brings "it" every game he plays, and isn't afraid to take it a little bit too far at times to ensure his teammates are protected.
"I'm just glad to get out there and help out the guys with a bit more space." said the youngster winger.
Leading the league (by a wide margin) in penalty minutes, Hordichuk does put the Royals at a disadvantage sometimes being shorthanded. That is the small price to pay to ensure the more "softer" star players are protected, and by-in-large it has paid off. Even during a trying season where the team is retooling, many of the team's stars are still putting up point-per-game seasons. They are able to play with a clear mind knowing that they have a "policeman" ready and willing to jump over the boards and has their back.
"Darcy gives us a good look on that third line. He will never be one to put up a lot of points, but I can assure you, he will hit, and will hit hard. He will grind, and will intimidate anyone willing to engage. We missed that element on our team for many years and I can see that role sticking around for the long term, and Darcy is primed to hold it." said GM Nagle.
